"Two Faces, One Purpose" Juxtaposed Portraits

In this Digital Illustration project, we were tasked with combining two people into “one image,” using a digital illustration technique via Adobe Illustrator. The idea behind this illustrative poster was to allow two completely different people to come together and share a similar message.

I decided to choose two men who, on the surface, don’t seem to have anything in common, but the words they speak are related when put next to each other. I chose to combine:

  1. 1) Malcolm X, a well known African American revolutionary, Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement until his assassination in 1965. His quote reads: “Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you justice or equality or anything. If you’re a man, you take it.”

  2. Tyler Durden, a fictional character from the movie “Fight Club” represents the narrator's imaginary alter ego, the embodiment of his “death drive” and repressed masculinity. His quote reads: “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”

Even though these two are from completely different worlds, I conveyed from each of their quotes one common message: that freedom is subjective to each individual. The quotes are combined & shadowed repetitively across the poster, creating a pattern of sorts. The illustrations of the men convey a sense of solemn determination, with an underlying intensity emanating from each side of the merged face.
